چکیده

Measurements of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity have been made on two samples of Climax Stock quartz monzonite at pressures between 3 and 50 MPa and temperatures between 300 and 523 K. Following those measurements, the apparatus was calibrated with respect to the thermal conductivity measurement using a reference standard of fused silica. Corrected thermal conductivity of the rock indicates a value at room temperature of 2.60 ± 0.25 W/mK at 3 MPa increasing linearly to 2.75 ± 0.25 W/mK at 50 MPa. These values are unchanged (+ 0.07 W/mK) by heating under .50-MPa pressure to as high as 473 K. The conductivity under 50-MPa confining pressure falls smoothly from 2.75 ± 0.25 W/mK at 313 K to 2.15 ± 0.25 W/mK at 473 K. Thermal diffusivity at 300 K was found to be 1.2 ± 0.4 X 10 6 m /s and shows approximately the same pressure and temperature dependencies as the thermal conductivity.

Lattice Thermal Conductivity Within the Earth and Considerations of a Relationship Between the Pressure Dependence of the Thermal Diffusivity and the Volume Dependence of the Grneisen Parameter

The method proposed by Mooney and Steg (1969) for obtaining the dilatational dependence of the Gr0neisen parameter from data on the pressure dependence of the thermal conductivity (or, equivalently, thermal diffusivity) is critically examined and applied to thermal diffusivity data for sodium chloride and quartz. The values obtained are ?o'(--(d?/dA)la_-o) = 3.0 for sodium chloride and 7o' = 2....

Experimental Determination of the Pressure Dependence of the Thermal Diffusivity of Teflon, Sodium Chloride, Quartz, and Silica

The thermal diffusivity of Teflon, sodium chloride, quartz, and silica glass was measured at 40øC to pressures of 35, 18, 30, and 36 kbar, respectively. A transient line source method was modified for use in a piston-cylinder high-pressure c ll. Pressure gradients were determined by experiments with bismuth foils. The pressure dependence of the thermal diffusivity at 40øC for the substances stu...

An Improvement in Thermal and Rheological Properties of Water-based Drilling Fluids Using Multiwall Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT)

Designing drilling fluids for drilling in deep gas reservoirs and geothermal wells is a major challenge. Cooling drilling fluids and preparing stable mud with high thermal conductivity are of great concern. Drilling nanofluids, i.e. a low fraction of carbon nanotube (CNT) well dispersed in mud, may enhance the mixture thermal conductivity compared to the base fluids. Thus, they are potentially ...

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Flower-Like α-Quartz Nanostructures from Iran Kaolin

Over the past many years, synthesized silica (SiO2) has attracted wide attention because of its unique characteristics, such as low density, low thermal conductivity, high surface area, high thermal shock resistance and high specific strength. In this study, Flower-like α-quartz nano-structures have been synthesized through the hydrothermal method. The synthetic...

Thermal and Rheological Properties Improvement of Oil-based Drilling Fluids Using Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT)

In this paper, we detail our results for the impact of MWCNT on the thermal and rheological properties of oil-based drilling muds. Our analysis considers the effects of time, temperature, and MWCNT volume fraction. The scanning electron microscopy imaging technique was used to monitor the MWCNTsdispersion quality. The experimental results unveil a considerable enhancement in the thermal conduct...
